It works with 3D printers! However, the g-code has to be altered slightly
since you failed to mention how, you have to change everything before the first G01 with G90 M83 G28 and also replace every instance of G01 to G1

Could this work using bismuth crystals for added visual effect?
yes, it works with crystals as well, however if you want to make it easy you should keep the crystals pointing away from the floating magnet. otherwise if the rough crystals point to it, or if the almost flat film pointing to it is to thin it might become much harder to balance. but if you have huge crystals it should be pretty easy to make it float in between the crystals.
